History of Speak Out

The summer of 2011 was the start of something big. It was when Speak Out Against Suicide was formed. During the previous school year, the daughter of co-founder Nikki Carber, lost a classmate to suicide. At the time, her daughter was in 8th grade and the thought that a child could bear so much pain at such a young age was heartbreaking.
It was time to act. From a pledge booth at our small-town festival to an organization that helps hundreds of people a year. We are blessed with an amazing team who care deeply about helping others. Our hope is that our younger generation will involve themselves to carry on the grass roots effort for many years to come.
No more silence. No more stigma. Only actionEducation is prevention.Community is connection—and connection is healing. No more silence. No more stigma. Only actionEducation is prevention.Community is connection—and connection is healing.

In 2023, students from Prince of Peace designed placemats for the meal. One design resonated with our board, “It’s okay just because you aren’t better than someone, think again”. This was designed by 10-year-old Dane Eggers.
